Manning, Colts edge Redskins despite 3 fumbles

With running back Clinton Portis sidelined with an injury, Ryan Torain has emerged as Washington’s next option in the backfield. After struggling in his first three appearances of the season, Torain exploded for 100 yards and two touchdowns against the Colts. He averaged 11.7 yards per carry with 3+ WRs on the field.

The Redskins entered Sunday night’s matchup with the worst rushing defense when the opposing offense was in a 3-wide receiver set. This trend continued against the Colts as Joseph Addai and Mike Hart racked up 163 yards on 23 carries when the Colts had 3 wide receivers on the field.

Manning finished 19 of 29 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns out of the shotgun Sunday at FedEx Field. That computes to a 117.9 passer rating, good even by Peyton’s standards. Entering Sunday, Manning ranked in the top three in the league in all major passing categories out of the shotgun. We can only anticipate that to continue as last season Manning led the NFL in completions (288) and yards (3,226) while tying his younger brother Eli for most touchdowns (20).

Peyton Manning struggled when throwing left of the hash marks, completing only 7 of 15 attempts for 62 yards. Yet this is where he decided to throw three passes on a crucial drive that started with 2:42 remaining in the game. Not surprisingly the Redskins defended all three passes, forcing a punt. Manning may have wanted to try either between the hash marks or to the right of them, as he enjoyed a great day passing to those areas of the field.

Peyton Manning picks apart base defenses (16 TD, 97.9 passer rtg since 2008) so teams have turned to overusing nickel and dime defenses in order to disguise their looks. The Colts are no strangers to this tactic as they have faced four of the five highest single-game totals against nickel and dime sets this season. The average offensive team records 19.8 touches (rushes + receptions) against 5+ DBs per game, Indy is averaging a staggering 42.3.

ManningPeyton Manning had his 60th career 300-yard passing game Sunday night. By the time Manning is done, there is a pretty good chance he will retire with that record.
