MELBOURNE, Australia – A tempestuous Mardy Fish crashed out of the Australian Open in the second round on Wednesday, losing to Colombia’s Alejandro Falla 7-6 (4), 6-3, 7-6 (6).

Fish looked uncomfortable and increasingly frustrated as the match wore on, talking impatiently to a ball kid at one point and complaining to the chair umpire on multiple changeovers about the number of times Falla had called the trainer.

Falla double-faulted on his first match point in the third-set tiebreaker, but came back to win it when Fish badly missed a backhand volley.

Fish, seeded eighth at Melbourne Park, is coming off a career-best season in which he cracked the top 10 for the first time and reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.
