Plagiarism accusation for Co. governor candidate

DENVER — Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott McInnis is making private apologies to a Colorado judge for lifting parts of the judge’s work for a series of essays about water rights, which McInnis passed off as his own.

McInnis had no immediate plans for a public apology after local media outlets reported the plagiarism. A McInnis spokesman called the plagiarism in the “Musings on Water” essays a “serious mistake” and blamed a research assistant for failing to cite the original author, Colorado Supreme Court Justice Gregory Hobbs.

McInnis’ challenger, Dan Maes, told a conservative radio host Tuesday that McInnis should “man up” about the plagiarism. And a foundation that paid McInnis for the essays states it may seek a refund.

According to The Denver Post, McInnis’s “Musings on Water” were published as original work totaling more than 150 pages, in 23 installments. The articles were required as a part of his two-year fellowship at the Hasan Family Foundation in 2005.

The newspaper showed some portions are identical or almost identical to an essay on water written 20 years earlier by Hobbs. McInnis was reportedly paid $300,000 to do talking engagements, complete research, and write about water issues.

“There are definite similarities,” Hobbs stated through a written statement released to the newspaper. “I would anticipate there would be some attribution.”

The Denver Post contributed to this report.
