Health Canada has issued a warning about dietary supplements for enhancing male sexual performance that were being sold in Surrey and Abbotsford, B.C.
Health inspectors seized the products, labeled Vigofit and Once More, at two Herbalex retail outlets, Health Canada stated in a news release Tuesday.
The red and white capsules contain sildenafil, a prescription medication that may pose serious and potentially life-threatening health risks, particularly to people with heart problems, the release said.
The drug can increase the risk of cardiovascular side-effects such as heart attack, stroke, chest pain, high blood pressure and abnormal heart beat. Other side-effects include headache, facial flushing, indigestion, dizziness, abnormal vision and hearing loss.
Sildenafil is an active ingredient in legitimate erectile dysfunction medications, which are available only by prescription.
People who bought and used the unauthorized products and are concerned about the effects should consult their doctor, Health Canada said.
Health Canada recommended that consumers read the labels of health products they intend to purchase to verify that they have been assessed by Health Canada for safety, effectiveness and quality.
Products that have been authorized for sale by Health Canada will have an eight-digit drug identification number, a natural product number or a homeopathic medicine number on the label, the release said.
