New XCOM goes FPS, Strategy Games apparently Not Contemporary

Here’s a tidbit that will probably have fans of strategy games feeling winded, especially if they happen to be XCOM buffs already clued in about the turn the new series is expected to take. In an interview with MCV, Christoph Hartmann, the guy who swings the hammer around at 2K states that XCOM is going FPS because strategy games can’t be called contemporary anymore.

The good news is that in spite of the upcoming series banking on FPS, there have been speculations about tactical strategy and player decisions also interrupting the gameplay. Hartmann insists this move isn’t being executed with the idea of cashing in on the franchise’s popularity, but rather with the need for refreshing it according to modern day gaming wants.
Apparently, turn-based strategy games aren’t ‘the hottest thing on planet Earth’ any longer. We’ll just have to see the results of what appears to be a well-pondered gamble when XCOM comes out in 2012.
