Microsoft Getting the ‘Living Crap’ Kicked Out of Publishers, Claims Sony

While talking to a gaming website, a Sony representative had apparently gone on record saying, ‘publishers are getting the living crap kicked out of them by Microsoft.’ This thought was probably provoked by Microsoft’s recent revelation that downloadable games must ship on Xbox Live at least simultaneously with competing platforms or the company might refuse to publish them.

In an interview with IndustryGamers, Rob Dyer, Sony’s SVP of public relations opened this heart out about the policies set by Microsoft upon publishers and the problems caused due to them. ‘All kinds of restrictions,’ are apparently faced by anyone who wants to publish anything on Xbox Live.

It’s also been cited that European Xbox boss Chris Lewis, while talking to Eurogamer, disclosed that Xbox 360 titles should ship in concurrence with other platforms and must have at least ‘feature and content parity on-disc’ with different consoles wherever the game is available in the world. And it looks like this statement has been met with a strong response from Sony.

While talking to the website, Dyer stated, “I think what Chris and the other representatives at Microsoft are doing is protecting an inferior technology. I think they want to dumb it down and keep it as pedestrian as possible so that if you want to do anything for Blu-ray or you have extra content above 9 gigs or you want to do anything of that nature, you’d better sure as heck remember that Microsoft can’t handle that.”

Experts are raising fingers at this policy of Microsoft and at the company’s dodgy relationship with Valve. While on the other hand, Sony is expected to enjoy quite a good rapport with Valve, owing to which Portal 2’s PS3 and Steam integration became a reality. But nothing of this sort was seen with the Xbox 360 version of the game.

Sony’s remarks about Microsoft getting the ‘living crap’ kicked out of publishers may be a harsh one as some would say, but the stir it has created in the gaming world is sure to incite some quandary in the company.
