When you are only interested in a specific object on a web page, like a video player or Flash game, you may sometimes prefer to hide or remove the remaining page to concentrate fully on that single element. Maybe is it because the page is distracting you with advertisements, or because you would like the freedom to resize the object as you see it fit.

Back in 2011 I reviewed an add-on for the Firefox web browser that let you detach videos and games from the browser window. This granted you to only display the selected video or game in a window, and to resize it anyway you wanted to.

The Firefox add-on lmnpop has been updated recently to be fully compatible with newer versions of the browser. Unlike the add-on mentioned above, it grants you to move any object that you see on a web page into its own resizable window. While it works excellent for videos and games, you are no longer limited to detaching Flash contents from the web browser.

Once you have installed the extension and restarted Firefox, the option to detach an element becomes available in the right-click context menu. You can use it to play videos in their own fully resizable window for instance. Why I’m highlighting the features of the extension with a video? Because it is a lot easier to detach a bigger element from a page, than it is to detach a smaller one. Please also note that YouTube may not be the ideal example in this regard, considering that it comes with its own pop out option.

The easiest way to detach an item from the page is to right-click on the page or item. Why two different approaches? Because some plugins, like Flash, block the standard browser right-click option, so that you do not see the browser’s context menu, but the Flash context menu instead.

The extension recognizes objects, which can be games, videos or apps automatically, and displays them prominently in the context menu. A click on the object of choice pops it out of the browser into its own window.

The extension picks up selectors in the site’s source code, which you can alter in the program options. It by default recognizes the selectors embed, video, audio and object, with options to remove or add selectors quite easily here.

The selected object is by default moved from the page into its own window. If you close that window, the region where the element was on the page remains empty. You can however configure the program to clone elements instead, which basically loads a second instance of the object in the new window without removing it from the original website.

The add-on grants you to pop out a div that the mouse is currently hovering over as well, which improves the functionality significantly.

Please note that the latest version of the add-on is currently listed under Other Versions on the add-on page, and that an older version is provided as the main downloaded when you click on the install button on that page.

Kuipers celebrated the 40th anniversary of Rocket Man by playing Sir Elton’s hit in the International Space Station. “Rocket Man came from those boyhood dreams of traveling beyond the stars and looking back on Earth,” the singer has written to the astronaut. “My thanks for keeping those boyhood dreams alive.”

The Marquess of Worcester is upset by the closure of Public, the Chelsea haunt co-owned by Guy Pelly, the Duke of Cambridge’s friend.

“It’s another example of the nanny state,” claims the heir to the Duke of Beaufort and his 52,000-acre Badminton estate in Gloucestershire. “Will have to find an alternative location for midnight renditions of rugby songs.”

There is not enough evidence to justify a provincewide ban on the cosmetic use of pesticides but the regulations restricting their use should be tightened, according to a special committee of B.C. MLAs.

“The majority of the committee does not think the scientific evidence, at this time, warrants an outright ban,” explained Liberal MLA Bill Bennett, who chaired the committee made up of five Liberal MLAs and three NDP MLAs.

Bennett stated cancer has hit his family hard, and if he thought a pesticide ban would save lives, he would have recommended one. And even though a majority of public responses to the committee supported a ban, “the evidence just doesn’t support the banning of cosmetic pesticide in B.C.”

But the deputy chair of the committee, NDP environment critic Rob Fleming, stated his party was not happy with the recommendation not to ban the use of cosmetic pesticides in B.C.

“New Democrats are profoundly disappointed in the outcome of this process,” stated Fleming.

“Instead of making good on the premier’s repeated promise to ban cosmetic pesticides, the Liberals have brought in minimal regulatory changes.”

Premier and opposition leader supported ban

Fleming was referring to a statement by Premier Christy Clark last year that she supported a provincewide ban.

“I support banning the cosmetic use of pesticides,” stated Clark after NDP Opposition Leader Adrian Dix introduced a private member’s bill last May to ban the sale, transfer or use of pesticides for cosmetic purposes that never became law.

The special committee was set up a month later to consult residents about a possible ban.

An all party committee is recommending no provincewide ban on cosmetic pesticide use in B.C. (CBC)

Several environmentalist groups and the B.C. Cancer Society have also been calling for province-wide ban, and Quebec, Ontario and many B.C. municipalities already have bans in place, Fleming noted.

“We had an unprecedented level of public interest and participation for a legislative committee, reflecting a widespread consensus among the public and scientific community that the cosmetic use of pesticides pose an unnecessary health risk to children, pets and our water supply,” stated Fleming.

“There are viable non-synthetic alternatives that are already available and the associated health risks of cosmetic pesticides warrants government action to reduce each day exposure to toxins that are potentially harmful and easily misused.”

ScienceDaily (May 17, 2012) — An experimental drug targeting a common mutation in melanoma successfully shrank tumors that spread to the brain in nine out of 10 patients in part of an international phase I clinical trial report in the May 18 issue of The Lancet.

The drug dabrafenib, which targets the Val600 BRAF mutation that is active in half of melanoma cases, also cut the size of tumors in 25 of 36 patients with late-stage melanoma that had not spread to the brain. The drug also showed activity in other cancer types with the BRAF mutation.

“Nine out of 10 responses among patients with brain metastases is really exciting. No other systemic therapy has ever demonstrated this much activity against melanoma brain metastases,” stated study co-lead author Gerald Falchook, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Investigational Cancer Therapeutics at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Melanoma patients whose disease has spread to their brains have a median overall survival of four or five months, the researchers noted. Drugs used to treat brain metastases have response rates of 10 percent or lower. Surgery and stereotactic or whole-brain radiation also are used.

Tumor shrinkage in the nine responders ranged from 20 percent to 100 percent. In four cases, the brain metastases disappeared.

Drug’s reach into brain a surprise

These results will need to be validated in additional clinical trials with bigger groups of patients, Falchook said. “This changes how we think of this drug and exclusion criteria for future trials.”

“Most clinical trials exclude patients with brain metastases because the drugs are assumed not to cross the blood-brain barrier,” Falchook said. “These are the patients most in need of a clinical trial because their treatment options are so limited.”

Dabrafenib, made by GlaxoSmithKline, was not designed to cross the blood-brain barrier, which protects the brain from toxic substances in the blood.

The drug’s activity against brain metastases was initially a serendipitous finding at one study site. In one patient, a research PET scan performed just before starting dabrafenib revealed a brain metastasis, but this result was not available until after treatment began. The institution’s ethics board approved the patient to continue treatment because a follow-up PET scan two weeks later showed decreased metabolic activity in the brain metastasis and subsequent MRIs showed a reduction in its size.

The team then designed a sub-study for 10 patients with untreated brain metastases, Falchook said. The mechanism by which dabrafenib reaches tumors in the brain is under investigation.

“In all of these patients with melanoma brain metastases, the tumors eventually progressed,” Falchook said. Prevention of drug resistance remains a challenge in advanced cancers.

High response rate for those without brain metastases

184 patients enrolled at eight sites in the United States and Australia. Of these, 156 patients had melanoma that had spread to other organs. MD Anderson enrolled 64 patients.

The main purpose of a phase I clinical trial is to gradually escalate an experimental drug’s dosage to evaluate side effects and establish the highest possible dose that can be safely given.

The researchers never reached a maximum-tolerated dose limit. No patients had to discontinue the drug due to side effects, and few patients experienced severe toxicity. “This is a very non-toxic drug, which is common with these newer, targeted therapies,” Falchook said.

Based on response rates and the drug’s pharmacokinetics — how the body metabolizes it — the team recommended an oral dose of 150 mg twice daily for future phase II and phase III trials. In the second stage of the phase I trial, they tested that dose in:

36 patients with melanoma with the Val600 BRAF mutation without brain metastases, 10 patients with untreated melanoma brain metastases, and 28 patients with other BRAF-mutant cancers.

Among the 36 melanoma patients without untreated brain metastases:

25 (69 percent) had a partial or complete response, which is shrinkage of at least 30 percent as determined by measuring tumor shrinkage with radiographic imaging, 18 (50 percent) had a confirmed response, meaning the reduction in size was observed in a second imaging scan at least one month later, 17 (47 percent) stayed on the trial for more than six months, and. Responses were seen in the less common Val600Lys BRAF mutation.

The confirmed response rate was similar to that in a phase III study of vemurafenib, the first drug approved for treatment of BRAF-mutant melanoma.

Among those with other types of cancers, patients with papillary thyroid, non-small cell lung and colorectal cancers had partial responses.

“This is further evidence that a tumor’s molecular profile is as important, and possibly more important, than the organ where the cancer begins,” Falchook said.

“We need to screen for BRAF and other molecular abnormalities in our patients’ tumors,” he said. “In many other tumor types BRAF mutations occur in small percentages of patients. If we are not testing for it routinely, these patients might never be treated with a promising targeted agent for their cancer.”

Falchook has six melanoma patients still receiving dabrafenib, including five who are in complete remission. In addition, Falchook is still treating six papillary thyroid patients and one colorectal cancer patient whose tumors have not progressed on the treatment.

GlaxoSmithKline sponsored and funded the clinical trial. Phase II and phase III trials of dabrafenib for melanoma are under way.

LOS ANGELES — When Daymond Langkow beat Jonathan Quick on a breakaway and celebrated Phoenix’s first lead in the Western Conference finals, captain Dustin Brown was almost curious how his Los Angeles Kings would respond to the first serious adversity they have faced in weeks.

Their answer told Brown that this unbelievable bunch of Kings is almost ready to play for the Stanley Cup.

Anze Kopitar scored the tying breakaway goal just 2:07 later, Dwight King added the winner early in the third period and the Kings rolled to the brink of their first Stanley Cup final in 19 years with a 2-1 victory in Game 3 on Thursday night, taking a 3-0 lead in the West finals.

Eleven months after being essentially demoted to the third line, Jarret Stoll is playing the ideal hockey of his career, and there was no more impactful player on the ice Thursday night, writes Pierre LeBrun. Story

• LeBrun: Game turning dishonest?

Quick made 18 saves, and the eighth-seeded Kings improved to 11-1 in an undeniably charmed run through the NHL postseason by a franchise with 44 seasons of frustrating, Cup-free history.

For the third straight series, the West’s final playoff team will play for a sweep in Game 4 on Sunday.

“Phoenix was a lot better tonight, but we found a way to win,” Brown said. “That’s what it takes this time of year. It’s exciting. There’s a lot of guys in here that have not experienced this … but the thing that is made this work is how we are handling all this. We’re up 3-0 again.”

Although the Kings trailed for the first time in almost 18 periods since April 28, they bounced back swiftly before largely controlling the third period. King scored his fourth goal in three games against the Coyotes, who face a deficit only three teams have overcome in NHL playoff history.

King connected 1:47 into the third, beating Mike Smith high to the glove side. The big rookie scored two goals in the series opener and added the winner in Game 2.

“Everybody is answering the challenge and being better,” stated King, who has outscored the Coyotes all by himself in the series. “We’re playing good, playing consistent. With the way we are going, we are tough to beat right now.”

Smith stopped 26 shots in a standout performance for the third-seeded Coyotes, who must win four straight to reach their first Stanley Cup final in club history.

“None of us planned on being in (a 3-0 hole),” Phoenix captain Shane Doan said. “I do not think it’s disbelief, but I think it’s disappointed.”

In front of a long-suffering crowd gratefully enjoying its unexpected good fortune after decades of disappointment, the Kings dominated the third period in front of Quick. They forechecked relentlessly in the final minutes, forcing Smith to play a long stretch without his goal stick because Phoenix could not clear the zone so he could retrieve it.

The crowd soaked in another memorable performance during the ideal playoff run by this Second Six franchise since Wayne Gretzky and Luc Robitaille led Los Angeles to its only conference title in 1993, while the Coyotes wondered if their own remarkable postseason run has any chance of continuing beyond Sunday.

“We want to play with a lead, but we did not even have a chance,” Phoenix’s Mikkel Boedker said. “They got a breakaway and came right back. … They’re a good team, and we know that, but the series is not over. We still have time to win it.”

Los Angeles largely dominated the first two games of the series in Glendale, outshooting the Coyotes 88-51 while winning by a combined 8-2. Phoenix had no more luck than Vancouver or St. Louis against the surprising No. 8 seeds, who completed two points behind the Pacific Division champion Coyotes in the regular season before steamrolling the West’s top two teams in a combined nine games.

“We’ll take a couple of days here and rest up, and what have we got to lose?” Phoenix coach Dave Tippett asked. “We’ll come here and play as hard as we can. We’ll give a real honest evaluation of who we are and how we got here.”

Phoenix played Game 3 without forward Martin Hanzal, who served a one-game suspension for boarding Brown in Game 3. Doan, who escaped suspension for his own hit, took up the job of agitating Brown, facewashing the Kings’ high-scoring captain with his glove during one scrum.

After Smith came up with several stellar saves during a scoreless first period, Keith Yandle slipped a long pass behind Mike Richards to Langkow, who beat Quick between the legs for his first goal of the postseason 1:03 into the second. Los Angeles had not trailed since the first period of Game 1 in its second-round series with St. Louis 19 days ago.

Staples Center briefly fell silent, but reached full roar moments later when Brown found Kopitar with a long pass behind the Phoenix defense. The Slovenian star beat Smith with a backhand for his fifth goal of the playoffs.

The teams were even in goals and shots heading to the third period, but King quickly put Los Angeles ahead with the latest impressive play of his incredible first NHL playoff run. Moments after Smith made a spectacular point-blank save on Stoll, King collected the puck during a delayed penalty and wired a high shot past Smith’s glove into the top corner of the net.

“What a shot, and an even better look on his face when he saw where it went,” Stoll said.

Tippett did not love the call that created the delayed penalty.

“If I told you what I really thought (about the officiating), I think it would cost me a lot of money,” he said.

Phoenix responded to its deficit with more physical play in Game 3, even though keeping most of it within legal limits after the borderline goonery of the Game 2 blowout. The Coyotes inserted enforcer Paul Bissonnette into their lineup for the first time since Game 4 of the opening round.

Game notes The game was the first of six playoff contests in four days at Staples Center, where the NBA’s Lakers and Clippers will host back-to-back second-round playoff games this weekend. The Tour of California — the nation’s largest cycling race — also finishes outside the arena about 30 minutes before the puck drops on Game 4 Sunday. …Marc-Antoine Pouliot took Hanzal’s spot in the Coyotes’ lineup, and Bissonnette replaced Gilbert Brule. D Adrian Aucoin has missed the entire series with an injury. … The Kings have won seven straight road games, and they stuck with coach Darryl Sutter’s scheme to keep the road vibe at home by staying in a hotel across the street from Staples Center on Wednesday night. … USC QB Matt Barkley attended the game.

updated 11:52 p.m. ET May 17, 2012

LOS ANGELES – Dwight King scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period, Jonathan Quick made 18 saves, and the Los Angeles Kings rolled to the brink of their first Stanley Cup final in 19 years with a 2-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday night.

The Kings lead the Western Conference finals 3-0.

“We wanted to have our own push in front of our owns fans, show our push,” stated Kings forward Jarret Stoll, whose hustle set up King’s goal. “It took us a while to get our own game (going), but we did, especially in the third period.”

Anze Kopitar also scored to help the eighth-seeded Kings improve to 11-1 in their improbable postseason run. Despite trailing in a game for the first time since April 28, King scored his fourth goal in three games against the Coyotes, who face a deficit only three teams have overcome in NHL playoff history.

Game 4 is Sunday at Staples Center.

Mike Smith stopped 26 shots in a standout performance for the third-seeded Coyotes, who must win four straight to reach their first Stanley Cup final in club history.

Although the Kings have won eight consecutive playoff games during this rampage through the West bracket, they fell behind for the first time in almost 18 periods when Daymond Langkow scored on a breakaway for Phoenix early in the second period. That deficit disappeared just over 2 minutes later on Kopitar’s breakaway goal.

King came through again 1:47 into the third, beating Smith high to the glove side. The big rookie scored two goals in the series opener and added the winner in Game 2.

Los Angeles largely dominated the first two games of the series in Glendale, outshooting the Coyotes 88-51 while winning by a combined 8-2.
Katie Stallard, media and technology correspondent

The company stopped taking orders for its shares ahead of its much-hyped initial public offering on Friday.

Demand had been so strong the company increased the number of shares for sale by 25%, and pushed the price up from between $28-$35 (£18-£22) per share.

As more and more of the world moves to either dual platform or just mobile only use, the inability to monetise could be quite problematic.

Jessica Powell, Badoo social network chief marketing officer

The Nasdaq exchange in New York, where the Facebook stock will be listed, has reportedly been running tests on its systems for several days to prepare for an anticipated frenzy.

As Facebook’s fans prepare to fight for a share in the company, its critics are already questioning its price tag of over $100bn.

General Motors – which owns the Vauxhall brand in the UK – has just pulled its $10m (£6.3m) advertising contract, claiming Facebook’s ads had tiny impact on consumers’ decisions to purchase cars.

And the social network itself has admitted its capability to make money from customers using the site on mobile phones, now around half of Facebook’s users, is “uncertain and will take time”.

Facebook undoubtedly has extraordinary reach, with more than 900 million users worldwide, transcending race, religious and national boundaries. The challenge now will be turning what is essentially a social network, into a profitable, commercial one.

Jason Jenkins, editor of CNET UK, said: “Can Facebook possibly be worth $100bn? It’s hard to see how. Most of its revenue comes from advertising, but some advertisers are complaining that they are not getting a good return on their ad money, and the ads themselves are unsophisticated.

“I cannot see Mark Zuckerberg and his team ever running the kinds of invasive ads that advertisers will increasingly demand in exchange for the millions they are sending Facebook’s way.

Zuckerberg states making the world ‘more open and connected’ is Facebook’s mission

“Given that, I’m not sure where the mega-profits shareholders anticipate to see will come from.”

But social media evangelists insist Facebook’s advertising does work, if in a more subtle, sophististicated way. Zuckerberg’s younger sister works for the social media marketing company Wildfire in Silicon Valley.

Its chief executive, Victoria Ransom, told Sky News: “Facebook has got this capability to really turn friend recommendations into advertising content, and the trust level is so much higher. I think it’s a new form of marketing.

“It’s really reacting to the fact that consumers are looking for friend recommendations. They’re not looking to just be blasted with advertising messages from brands they do not trust.”

The Badoo social network has 150 million users in 180 countries. Its marketing chief, Jessica Powell, stated that while Facebook’s growth had been admirable, it would have to find a way to make mobile use pay.

“(Facebook) has a large number of their users who are using the mobile application every single day, but that is not something that they are monetising,” she said.

“As more and more of the world moves to either dual platform or just mobile only use, the inability to monetise could be quite problematic.”

Facebook’s mission, according to its soon to be multi-billionaire founder, Mark Zuckerberg, is to “make the world more open and connected”.

In the company’s glossy corporate roadshow video, the 28-year-old says: “We think that people’s live are going to be better and really that the whole world will function better, when there is more information out there about both the huge things in the world and the local things – what is going on with your friends and the people around you.”

The Australian dollar is higher but still below parity, helped by comments that the US Federal Reserve is open to stimulate the American economy.

At 1700 AEST on Thursday, the local unit was trading at 99.47 US cents, up from 98.93 cents on Wednesday.

Since 0700 AEST on Thursday, the Australian dollar traded between 99.09 US cents and 99.64 cents.

Commonwealth Bank currency strategist Joseph Capurso stated the Australian dollar strengthened after the US Fed overnight released the minutes of its April 24/25 policy meeting.

The minutes showed that US Fed members were prepared to embark on a third round of economic stimulus, called quantitative easing, if the economy lost momentum.

“Those comments weakened the US dollar and saw the Australian dollar rise,” Mr Capurso said.

On Monday the local currency fell below one US dollar for the first time in five months after Greek political leaders failed to concur on a coalition government after an election this month that failed to deliver a clear winner.

A second round of elections is expected on June 17 but uncertainty over whether Greece will exit the euro zone has soured market sentiment.

Mr Capurso stated as certainty grows about a date for the second round of Greek elections, the Australian dollar should gain ground.

“I think the Aussie will track a bit higher and probably get toward parity maybe this day or tomorrow,” he said.

The Reserve Bank of Australia’s trade weighted index was at 74.6, up from 74.3 on Wednesday.
