The Wire star Dominic West thinks about playing the Yorkshire Ripper
Unbowed by the controversy that greeted his decision to portray the serial killer Fred West in a tv drama, Dominic West is now toying with the idea of immortalising Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, on screen.
“Coming from Sheffield, I’ve been asked whether I’d like to make a film about the Yorkshire Ripper, as he was caught in the city,” states the dashing Old Etonian actor, who played West in Appropriate Adult on ITV1 last year. “But, as with Fred West, you have to find an interesting angle on these stories about serial killers. I don’t think the fact that Peter Sutcliffe is alive would get in the way of making a film or tv drama series.”
Anne-Marie Davis, the daugher of Fred West, was among many who were appalled by the drama in which Rosemary West was played by Monica Dolan. She talked of ITV’s “money-making voyeurism” and added: “They are unashamedly banking on the ‘Fred and Rose’ brand to steer a profit and gain some awards.”
Of Sutcliffe, West concedes: “To analyze the worst of human nature, I think you need a reason to do it and a certain redemption in the story, but just making films about horrible people is not, neccesarily, a good thing.”
