Robbie Williams quits Take That again after ‘£10m’ comeback
After rejoining Take That, however, he was entitled to a share in the profits of Progress, the band’s bestselling album, which has sold more than three million duplicates across the UK.
Williams’ new solo deal marks the end of a multi-million pound battle between music labels, ending a relationship with EMI that went back more than 15 years.
He stated he was “really thrilled” to be joining Universal, adding that it was “the most exciting time in my career”.
The singer’s next album is rumoured to be produced by fellow Take That member Gary Barlow.
Williams’ decision to leave EMI is the latest blow for the company, which is already struggling financially after being seized by Citigroup earlier this year over unpaid interest on a loan.
It has signed artists including Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Rolling Stones.
EMI said: “The company will continue to work with Robbie on all the astonishing music we have released over the last 15 years.
“It’s been an absolute privilege to have worked with Robbie.”
