Oprah opens up to Piers Morgan for CNN debut
A reviewer on TV.com praised Morgan’s “watchable, no-nonsense approach to interviewing” and stated his debut had represented a “decent start”.
The Boston Globe, meanwhile, stated that Morgan was “by turns charming, vain, well informed, and fawning – but mostly just fawning”.
It stated that Winfrey was not the best opening guest and that by interviewing Howard Stern, the US radio “shock jock” later in the week, Morgan “will have a better chance to show us whether ‘Piers Morgan Tonight’’ will be more than just another one of TV’s blah-blah-blah speak shows”.
And while The Hollywood Reporter stated Morgan’s debut “was a lesson in audacity and bluntness” for American interviewers, it concluded that it was ultimately underwhelming.
“Morgan’s interview with Oprah did what most overhyped spectacles do – it imploded upon everyone’s expectations,” it said. “It did, for all the world, seem like two self-important rich people speaking to each other.”
And Variety said: “Morgan was so deferential in his hour-long chat with Winfrey that the adjective she used to describe his interviewing skills – “Surprising” – seemed very generous indeed. ‘Boring’ would be more accurate.”
It added: “Other than laughing too hard at her jokes and being generally pleasant, it’s hard to see how this is any improvement over what Larry King was doing in the timeslot, other than being about three decades younger.”
The Washington Post found that “Morgan’s first show turned out to be a fawning and completely unnecessary interview with a successful businesswoman.”
“The goal was to replace ‘Larry King Live’ with something *better,* right?” stated the reviewer, Hank Stuever. “That might turn out to be harder than any of us would have guessed”.
