Mr Bean star Rowan Atkinson thinks about buying £10million ‘magical’ seaside estate in Devon
Having eventually won planning permission for his futuristic five-bedroom property in the Home Counties, Rowan Atkinson appears to be turning his attentions to a holiday retreat.
The star of Mr Bean and Blackadder is stated to be interested in buying a “magical” 155-acre estate on a peninsula in the Salcombe estuary in south Devon. The Gullet Estate was put on the market last year by Robert MacDonald, a former Royal Marines officer, and his American wife, Carolyn, with a guide price of £10 million.
“It is true to state we have had several well-known names, or celebrities if you so call them, viewing the property, and interest has been expressed,” states Martin Lamb, of Savills. “It’s not surprising, as it is a stunning, secluded property.” The estate includes a large, rambling Arts and Crafts-style house featuring a ballroom with a minstrels gallery.
The house, which was built by MacDonald’s parents in the Twenties, would appeal to Atkinson, who guards his privacy keenly, as it is visible only from the sea. Several sets of farm buildings are included in the sale, along with 35 acres of foreshore on a long-term lease from the Duchy of Cornwall.
Last year, Atkinson was forced to halt work on his glass and bright white steel house in Ipsden, Berks, after a rare reptile was discovered living on the land. Ecologists estimated that there were 30 slow worms, which resemble snakes and are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, living on the site.
