Broadcaster Mike Read enjoys shocks with YouTube sensation Tricia Walsh-Smith

Never afraid of a challenge, the broadcaster Mike Read is enjoying a blossoming friendship with Tricia Walsh-Smith, who became an world wide web sensation after she posted a hastily filmed diatribe against her estranged multi-millionaire husband on YouTube.
“She’s a lovely woman,” states Read, who hit the headlines when his musical Oscar Wilde closed after one night. “She has made a record and we share an interest in putting on shows and things like that.”
Millions of world wide web viewers watched Walsh-Smith, 53, voice her grievances against her husband, the 78-year-old New York theater impresario Philip Smith, in 2008. Read, 63, a former Radio 1 disc jockey who presented the children’s tv programme Saturday Superstore, states their friendship is, though, constantly surprising.
“I went to a party she was holding at Madame JoJo’s in Soho,” he says. “But she did not tell me that it was cross-dressing night. As I was going down the stairs, this man in high heels and a glamorous outfit stopped me and said: ‘Oh, my God, I was in love with you when I was a boy.’ You do not even want to know the things that other people stated to me.”
Walsh-Smith appeared in the surprise tv hit of the year, Pineapple Dance Studios, a fly-on-the-wall documentary series following life in and around the rehearsal rooms of the London dance studios. In one scene, she filmed a music video in which she knelt on the lawn of a country house, clinging to a teddy bear and weeping.
