British headhunter to stars in court on stalking charges

At the same time, it is alleged that Lou Reed’s manager threatened to have Mr Smith brutally killed by Israeli hit men after they, too, fell out over a separate business deal.

Mr Smith is accused of bombarding Mrs Higgins with abusive messages before posting her details on the world wide web and inviting others to harass her as well.

It is claimed that in September last year he left a voicemail telling her she had a “screw loose” and claiming: “I will have my revenge”.

“I will make sure everyone in New York knows that you are incompetent and your husband is an ass hole,” Mr Smith allegedly said. “I will have a really great laugh when I see your house crumble.” Mr Smith allegedly signed off by saying: “I will harass you”.

The headhunter is then alleged to have emailed Mrs Higgins nine times and posted 35 adverts on Craigslist, the listings website, telling people to call her house. She claims she received 50 calls.

Mrs Higgins states she was made to “fear physical injury, fear for the safety of her family, to have trouble sleeping at night, to have problems concentrating at home, and to fear leaving her home.” Mr Smith is charged with multiple counts of stalking and harassment, all of which he denies. He could be sentenced to a year in prison if convicted.

But simultaneously, it is alleged Tom Sarig, Lou Reed’s manager, threatened Mr Smith’s life last month during a row over whether his commission for finding Reed an assistant should be 15 or 18 per cent.

Mr Sarig and Mr Smith entered a bitter and foul-mouthed email exchange about the disputed sum – which amounted to $2,100 (£1,300) – throughout February.

Then, after Smith phoned Reed himself over the money, interrupting a session in the recording studio, the row was stated to have taken a more serious turn.

“Our guys in Israel are going to fly in and they will kill you,” Mr Sarig, a highly respected music industry figure, allegedly stated in a phone call on March 8. “You want your ——- head in a bag?”

“By the time they find you, they will be back in Israel toasting the sunset.

“Keep harassing us for money you are a ——- dead man.” He was alleged to have said.

Mr Sarig was arrested on suspicion of aggravated harassment. He was issued with an order to appear in a local court tomorrow for arraignment. He, too, could be sentenced to a year in prison. He denied the allegations.

Mr Smith rejects the alleged transcript of his voicemail. He claims the Craigslist adverts were an attempt to gather information in case he chose to sue Mrs Higgins over their business fallout.

He could not explain why he had recently found himself in such trouble. “I’m from the north of England,” he told The Daily Telegraph. “I’ve got a temper and a bad mouth – but I’m not a monster”.

Mr Sarig strongly denies making the statements to Mr Smith. His lawyer stated last night: “Adrian Smith has a very loose association with the truth. He tried to bully Tom Sarig when Mr Sarig did not give him what he wanted, and went whining to the cops over a couple of thousand dollars”.
