Beyonce plagiarism claims: copying her videos would have got me killed, states Belgian director
US singer Beyonce is accused of lifting two of the routines in her new music video ‘Countdown’ from choreography by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s dance company.
Filmmaker Thierry De Mey, who made the original music video featuring the moves, stated Beyonce would not have accepted other artists copying her work.
“If tomorrow I were to look for the music, the videos by Beyonce or any other pop or rock stars and use them in my movies without asking for their authorisation, I think Exocet missiles would fall over the Charleroi dance festival and myself,” Mr De Mey said.
Created in 1983, ‘Rosas danst Rosas’ is one of the Belgian dance company’s greatest hits and is still being danced around the world.
De Keersmaeker stated that she was “struck by the resemblance of Beyonce’s clip not only with the movement from ‘Rosas danst Rosas’ but also with the costumes, the set and even the shots from the film by director Thierry De Mey.”
“Obviously, Beyonce, or the music video director Adria Petty, plundered many bits of the integral scenes in the film,” De Keersmaeker wrote.
A spokesman for the dance company stated it was currently looking into launching legal proceedings against Beyonce.
Meanwhile the singer has issued a statement defending the scenes. She argues ‘Rosas danst Rosas’ is just one of many references in her music video alongside Audrey Hepburn film ‘Funny Face’ and the 60s and 70s looks of Brigitte Bardot, Andy Warhol and Diana Ross.
