Absolutely Fabulous: The Musical would not ring true, states Ruby Wax

Spotting the errors in Meryl Streep’s The Iron Lady after it opens on Friday will, I fancy, become every bit as entertaining an occupation as it has been with Downton Abbey.

Mandrake would like to be the first to question whether Anthony Head’s portrayal of Sir Geoffrey Howe will ring true in the biopic of Lady Thatcher now it turns out that, so far from being the “wet” of popular mythology – and the object of incessant bullying from Thatcher in the film – he may have been capable of taking an embarrassingly hard-line. While Howe may dispute their accuracy, the newly-released National Archives suggest that after the 1981 Toxteth Riots, he proposed “managed decline” for Liverpool, a policy that he then conceded would have to be kept quiet.

Head’s Sir Geoffey, by contrast, wouldn’t hurt a fly. In one scene in the film, when the PM is shown berating him for spinelessness in her final Cabinet meeting, the implication is that he has tipped her over the edge. Mandrake wonders if, in reality, she eventually just gave up trying to rein in her pet Doberman.

For two years, Mandrake’s New Year’s honours have pushed for a knighthood for Ronnie Corbett . The CBE that the 81-year-old comic is reported to be getting this time around is a step in the right direction. It is, however, only a small step.
