Toyota is recalling 1.13 million of its Corolla vehicles in the US, in the latest in a series of quality problems at the automobile maker. Toyota Corollas

The latest recall affects over a million vehicles in the US

The company stated it had unconfirmed reports of three accidents and one minor injury in connection with an engine fault.

The recall is for Corolla sedans and Corolla Matrix hatchbacks built between 2005 and 2008 – but it does not affect UK models.

In the past year, Toyota has also recalled another 11 million vehicles worldwide, hitting its reputation for safety as it comes under intense scrutiny from regulators.

The firm has been hit by a range of problems, including faulty accelerator pedals, floor mats that can trap accelerators and braking problems in its Prius hybrid.

The company stated the latest move over the Corollas was “to address some engine control modules (ECM) that may have been improperly manufactured”.

The engine can stall at any speed without warning and not restart.

Toyota stated “a crack may develop at certain solder points or on the electronic component used to protect circuits against excessive voltage” on the ECM’s circuit board.

The crack can result in the engine not starting or, in some cases, stopping while the car is being driven, it added.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been looking into reports of vehicles made between 2005 and 2007 stalling.

“The engine can stall at any speed without warning and not restart,” the NHTSA said.

The manufacturer’s Canadian arm is also recalling the vehicles and stated it had no reports of accidents or injuries.

Toyota stated it will replace the engine control modules on the recalled vehicles at no extra charge.

It will start informing customers with affected Corollas and Matrixes in mid-September.
