Germany’s Bundesbank has resisted calls to dismiss a member of its board who claimed that “all Jews share the same gene”. Thilo Sarrazin

Dr Sarrazin’s book is called Germany Abolishes Itself

Ahead of the launch of his book on immigration issues, Thilo Sarrazin has also stated that Muslim immigrants in Europe are unwilling or incapable of integrating into Western societies.

The 65-year-old’s comments – made in a German newspaper – have sparked outrage among the Jewish and Muslim community, and also drawn criticism from the Chancellor.

Angela Merkel has stated Bundesbank should dismiss Dr Sarrazin.

Her official spokesman, Steffen Seibert, added: “These are comments that only damage and do not help integration in this country, which is a national duty.”

In a statement issued after a special general meeting, the central bank has stated the 65-year-old’s remarks did not reflect its view – but stopped short of calling for his resignation.

The statement states the board believes Dr Sarrazin’s comments “hurt the image” of the bank and he would be spoken to before any further steps are taken.

In the book itself, called Germany Abolishes Itself, the banker states that immigrants have taken from the country’s welfare system without contributing enough in return.

It is not the first time remarks made by Dr Sarrazin have led to widespread condemnation.

In a magazine interview last year he said: “I do not need to accept anyone who lives on handouts from a say it rejects, is not adequately concerned about the education of their kids and constantly produces new tiny headscarf-clad girls.”

He later apologised for those comments.
