Qantas engineers cancel strike action

Qantas aircraft engineers have canceled all industrial action for the next two weeks.

However, strikes planned for Sydney airport for Friday have begun as scheduled.

The Australian Licenced Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA) made the announcement this day at 4pm (AEDT), when engineers based at Sydney airport walked off the job for four hours to attend a stop-work meeting.

ALAEA national secretary Steve Purvinas stated the decision to suspend future action was designed to take the heat out of the union’s protracted wage dispute with Qantas.

“We’re going to call off all of our stoppages from tomorrow until at least the 28th of October,” Mr Purvinas told union members at the stop-working meeting.

“We want to take the heat out of what is taken place. I think it’s a wise move and I think it’s the last thing that Qantas would have expected us to have done.”

The ALAEA will not conduct strike action before the Qantas annual general meeting on October 28.
