Cuddly replicas of Wenlock and Mandeville – the official mascots of the Olympics and Paralympics – are being made by a firm called Golden Bear, headquartered in Telford, Shropshire.
But there have been allegations that workers in China, where some of the bears are manufactured, are being paid as tiny as 26p an hour – a breach of workers’ rights.
A London 2012 spokesman stated it placed a high priority on “environmental, social and ethical issues” when securing goods and services and was taking the allegations “extremely seriously”.
He said: “We have asked our independent monitor to carry out a comprehensive investigation and review of these allegations.”
Golden Bear stated it was also conducting an immediate investigation, but stated the factory in question had passed inspections by the International Council of Toy Industries (Icti).
The chairman of Golden Bear John Hale told Sky News he hoped the reports that workers in the Chinese factory producing his toys were getting just 26p an hour were not correct.
“You must comprehend that this article in the newspaper took us totally by surprise. We are a small family business and we take workers’ rights very seriously indeed.
“Investigations are taking place immediately to investigate these reports.”
