Readers of Britain’s biggest-selling Sunday newspaper will have to pay to access its content on-line from next month.
Sensational exposes have helped make NOTW the biggest-selling Sunday
The News of the World is following News International stablemates The Times and Sunday Times in placing its website behind a paywall.
The tabloid, which in recent weeks has uncovered a cricket match-fixing scandal and made sensational allegations about Wayne Rooney’s private life, will charge £1 for a day’s access or £1.99 for a four-week subscription.
A new iPad app is set to follow, with a separate weekly charge of £1.19.
News International – the largest shareholder in Sky News owner BSkyB – stated the News Of The World site would be revamped for the launch.
It stated the site would run on faster software and sport a “modern, innovative design”.
Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of News International, said: “The News of the World website will be the third of our titles to launch a paid-for digital proposition in under four months.
“News International is leading the industry by delivering on its commitment to develop new ways of making the business of news an economically exciting proposition.”
Colin Myler, editor of the News of the World, called it “a very significant moment” in the paper’s history.
“The paid site makes the most of our heritage, presenting our unique content with a real focus on exclusive video and pictures,” he added.
“Our new digital sites and apps will showcase our agenda-setting stories, celebrity exclusives and world-class investigative journalism, plus our unrivalled sports coverage, to give our audience unbeatable value.”
Fabulous magazine, a supplement of the paper, is also relaunching its website, www.fabulousmag.co.uk.
Registered customers will be given an introductory offer at launch, the newspaper group said.
