Albanese defends $450m road funding
Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese has defended using a regional development fund to finance a $450 million upgrade of roadways around Perth Airport.
He was quizzed about the decision by West Australian Nationals MP Tony Crook during parliament’s question time on Tuesday.
“The reason why the Gateway project needs funding is because it is the most important infrastructure project for Western Australia,” Mr Albanese stated in response.
There was enormous pressure on the roads as well as the freight and intermodal systems around Perth airport and Fremantle port.
Mr Albanese also cited the travel demands of the fly-in, fly-out workforce and the large expansion of resources in WA.
The government made no apology for funding the project which had been a Labor election commitment, he said.
